Velur Engagement Ring with a Hidden Birthstone in a Cathedral Setting

In a nutshell

A hidden birthstone is a small gemstone set invisibly within an engagement ring—beneath the centre stone, in the bezel, or on the inside of the band. She’ll only see it if you tell her. At Velur, you can incorporate up to four hidden stones into each engagement ring—all lab-grown, colour-true, for a clear upcharge per stone.

What is a hidden birthstone?

Imagine she looks at her engagement ring, and beneath the centre stone—invisible from the outside—is a tiny blue sapphire. Her birthstone. Or a garnet, because her mother was born in January. Or an emerald that matches the colour of her favorite dress.

That’s exactly what the hidden birthstone is: a small gemstone that no one can see from the outside. It’s set either directly beneath the centre stone (in the spot where, on some rings, a hidden halo of tiny diamonds is placed), in the channel between the prongs, or on the inside of the band—against the skin.

The idea behind this is an old one. Even in Victorian England, it was common to hide meaning in jewellery: small engraved symbols, secret inscriptions, locks of hair set into medallions. The modern version of this is the hidden gemstone. Not a secret from the world—but one between the two of you.

What makes the Hidden Stone special: It’s the only personalised detail on the ring that’s exclusively for her. While the shape, style, and prong setting are elements that all her friends will see, the Hidden Stone belongs only to the two of you. It’s the intimate layer of the design—hidden beneath the surface, yet with her every day.

Where is the stone located? Three options

There are three classic positions, each with its own distinct character:

1. Under the main stone (Hidden Halo position)

Directly beneath the centre stone, visible only from the side or at an angle from above. This is the most popular style. In cathedral settings—where the centre stone rests on two rising arches—there is a natural cavity into which a small birthstone fits perfectly. It’s not visible from the typical viewing angle, but it catches the light from the side and shimmers subtly.

2. In the gallery

The gallery is the area between the prongs that hold the centre stone. A tiny stone fits into the side recesses here. This placement is particularly effective in solitaire rings with tall prongs—the hidden stone seems like a little secret you discover when you hold the ring up to the sun.

3. On the inside of the strap

The most intimate option. The stone is set on the inside, where the ring touches her finger. No one can see it—not even her, once the ring is on her finger. But she knows it’s there. Some couples deliberately choose this placement as a “warm touch” that belongs only to her.

The best position depends on the ring style. For a cathedral solitaire, position 1 is the natural choice. For a flat eternity band, only position 3 is an option. We’ll help you choose once we know which ring you’ve decided on.

Which gemstone corresponds to which month?

SeptemberBlue SapphireDeep Blue

NovemberCitrineGolden yellow

You don't necessarily have to stick to your birth month. Some couples choose a stone whose colour matches their favorite flower (roses → ruby, violets → amethyst), or they use the birth month of their mother, the expected child, or the month they met.

When does a Hidden Stone make sense?

The Hidden Birthstone isn't for everyone—and that's a good thing. It works best when you can tie a specific story to it. Here are a few scenarios where it really works:

You know exactly what month she was born in, and she loves subtle details

Classic and always a good choice. Especially if she's the type who uses monogrammed stationery or wears jewellery with her initials. She'll get the idea—and she'll love it.

She has a special relationship with another person

The birthstone of her mother, her late grandmother, her sister. This often means even more than her own birthstone, because it weaves a second connection into the ring—the one between her and someone who is important to her.

The month when you first met is clear

If you met in May, the emerald is a subtle reminder of the date when it all began. She won't understand its significance until you tell her—which makes the proposal itself even more special.

She has a favorite colour, which just happens to be a stone

Sometimes it's just that simple. She loves deep blue, so you choose a sapphire. You don't have to read too much into every little detail. Sometimes personalization is simply "because she loves it."

You plan to keep telling the story for years to come

At Velur, you can incorporate up to four hidden stones into a ring. Some couples do this intentionally: a second stone is added on their first wedding anniversary, and the child’s birthstone is added when their first child is born. The ring grows along with your story, without ever changing its appearance.

When it doesn't work: If you're not yet sure what she'll actually appreciate about the ring, don't go overboard with personalization. A classic, beautiful ring without a hidden stone is never a bad choice. A ring with a hidden stone that has no special meaning for her may feel forced later on.

Here's how Velur does it

At Velur, “Hidden Birthstones” is a standard option on every engagement ring product page. You choose the ring, select the option, pick up to four stones from the dropdown menu in the order you want—and you’re done. We’ll set them in exactly that order.

Three things you should know about this:

Lab-grown, not natural stones

We use only lab-grown gemstones for Hidden Stones. There are two reasons for this: First, it aligns with our philosophy—if something is sustainable on the outside (lab-grown diamond or moissanite), it should also be sustainable on the inside. Second, lab-grown stones in the small sizes required for Hidden Positions are available in a level of clarity that would be difficult to achieve with natural stones.

No extra charge for the setting, only for the stone itself

Setting the Hidden Stone is part of the standard jewellery-making process. You pay per gemstone—not for the extra work involved. This keeps things fair and makes personalization affordable.

No additional delivery time

Since the Hidden Stone is set in the same workshop where your ring is made anyway, the delivery time isn't extended. You'll receive the ring within the same timeframe as you would without the Hidden Stone.

If you're unsure which stone goes with which ring setting, message us on WhatsApp. We'll go over the options with you and send you sample photos before you make your decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra does a Hidden birthstone cost?

The additional charge depends on the stone and its size. You’ll see the exact amount in the configurator on the product page once you’ve selected the ring and stone. For lab-grown stones, the additional charge per stone falls within a range that won’t surprise most couples. If you’d like, we can give you the price in advance via WhatsApp.

What if I don't know which stone is right for her?

Her birth month is always a safe choice. If you don't know the month or want to skip it, choose the birth month of someone close to her—her mother, sister, or best friend. Or choose her favorite colour as a gemstone. It doesn't have to make perfect sense; it just has to feel right for her.

Can I add another Hidden Stone later?

Yes. We set up to four stones per ring. If you start with one, you can have another added on your first wedding anniversary, when you have your first child, or for any other occasion. You send us the ring, we add the stone, and send it back to you.

Is the stone really not visible from the outside?

For the upper positions, you have to hold the ring at an angle to the side and look closely to see the stone. On the inside of the band, it’s completely invisible from the outside—she can only see it when she takes the ring off.

Does this also work with eternity rings, or only with solitaire rings?

Both. With solitaire rings, the setting beneath the centre stone is the most striking, because the stone there shimmers slightly through the centre stone. With eternity bands, only the inner side remains visible—but that’s just as beautiful, just with a different character (intimate rather than visible in sunlight).

What if she wants to remove it later?

A Hidden Stone can be removed without damaging the ring. We take it out, close the setting—and the ring looks just as it did before. However, most couples who choose a Hidden Stone end up keeping it. Very often, it’s the detail that, over the years, truly makes the ring their own.
