333 gold (8 karat) is the budget-friendly entry-level option: lighter in tone, very hard, and unobtrusive for everyday wear. 585 gold (14 karat) is the most popular wedding ring alloy in Germany—rich color, comfortable to wear, and a balanced value for the price. 750 gold (18 karat) has the deepest, warmest gold tone and the highest material value, though it is slightly softer. Other options include 950 platinum —naturally white, dense, extremely durable, and without rhodium plating—as well as 925 silver, the most affordable option starting at €523 per pair.

Yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or two-tone?

Yellow gold is the classic choice and remains the most popular material for wedding rings. White gold has a cool, understated look, while rose gold is warm and personal. If you can’t decide or have different preferences, opt for two-tone wedding rings: Two-tone designs combine two alloys in a single ring—divided lengthwise, diagonally, or in a wavy pattern, and even in three colors upon request. A practical bonus: Two-tone rings go well with jewelry in both colors that you may already be wearing.

How wide should wedding rings be?

Widths of 2.5 to 4 mm have proven ideal for slender fingers, while 4 to 6 mm offer a more prominent look. The profile determines the comfort of the ring: a classic domed profile fits softly against the finger, while a flat profile has a more modern and angular look. When it comes to finishes, high-gloss polished remains the best-selling choice—timeless and easy to polish up. Matte finishes such as fine matte, sand matte, ice matte, or longitudinal matte hide fingerprints and have a more understated look; a hammered finish gives the ring a visible handcrafted look. Combinations are possible: a matte surface with polished seams.

A single diamond set into a narrower band is the classic choice; those who want more sparkle can opt for a pavé setting featuring multiple stones in a channel or bezel setting. Not in terms of language: Both terms refer to the rings exchanged when the couple says “I do.” “Trauringe” emphasizes the wedding ceremony, while “Eheringe” emphasizes the marriage that follows—they both refer to the same couple. The only distinction to make is between the engagement ring, which is presented before the proposal and is traditionally worn on the left hand in Germany, and the wedding rings, which are worn on the right hand after the wedding.

If she’s already wearing an engagement ring, there are two things worth considering: the alloy (the same gold color looks more subtle on the finger) and the profile—a narrow, flat women’s ring measuring 2 to 2.5 mm will nestle against a solitaire without tilting it. Gold and platinum are made for everyday wear. Two simple habits will help keep your rings looking their best for longer: Take them off briefly when doing rough work—such as gardening, lifting weights, or using tools—and clean them occasionally with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Polished surfaces can be refreshed later by a goldsmith, as can matte finishes; rings with set stones should not be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner without first having them checked by a professional.
