Carat Size Comparison: Engagement Ring on a Finger – Oval Moissanite on Marble

In a nutshell

A 0.5-carat stone measures approximately 5 mm in diameter, a 1-carat stone approximately 6.5 mm, and a 2-carat stone approximately 8.1 mm. However, the visual effect depends heavily on the cut, ring size, and setting. Oval stones appear about 8% larger than round ones of the same weight. At Velur, most customers choose between 1 and 1.5 carats for the best “wow” effect.

Carats do not equal size

This is the most common misconception we see at Velur: people equate carats with size. But they’re not the same thing. A carat is purely a unit of weight. 1 carat = 0.2 grams. No more, no less.

What does this mean in practice? Two stones weighing exactly 1 carat can look completely different in size. A deep round cut hides weight in the centre of the stone. A shallow oval distributes the same weight over a larger surface area. The result: The oval appears significantly larger, even though it weighs exactly the same.

We see time and again with our female customers that focusing solely on the carat weight can be misleading. What matters is the visible surface area when viewed from above. And that depends on the cut.

The Size Chart: Millimeters per Carat Weight

Here's where it gets specific. The following measurements show you how big a stone actually is at different carat weights. We distinguish between round and oval cuts because these are the two most popular shapes for engagement rings.

Carat Cylindrical Grind (Diameter) Oval cut (L × W) Visual Impression
0.5 ct approx. 5.0 mm approx. 6 × 4 mm Subtle and delicate. Perfect for slender fingers.
0.75 ct approx. 5.8 mm approx. 7 × 5 mm Noticeably larger. Striking, but not overpowering.
1.0 ct approx. 6.5 mm approx. 7 × 5 mm A classic. It stands out, but never seems over the top.
1.5 ct approx. 7.4 mm approx. 9 × 6 mm A statement size. Highly visible, very popular.
2.0 ct approx. 8.1 mm approx. 10 × 7 mm A showstopper. It immediately catches the eye.
3.0 ct approx. 9.3 mm approx. 12 × 8 mm Maximum presence. For everyone who loves it big.

The photo shows a direct comparison: four oval moissanite stones ranging from 0.5 to 2 carats on a finger. The difference between 0.5 and 1 carat is clearly visible. From 1 to 1.5 carats, the stone becomes noticeably larger. At 2 carats and above, the stone dominates the hand.

Important to Know

The measurements in the table are approximate values for well-proportioned stones. A poorly cut 1-carat stone may appear smaller than an excellently cut 0.8-carat stone. For moissanite, stones are listed in millimeters but are also given carat equivalents so you can compare them.

Why the Cut Makes All the Difference

The cut is the most important factor when it comes to perceived size. And there’s a simple reason for this: Different cuts distribute the weight differently.

An oval cut has a flatter crown and distributes the weight over a longer, wider surface area. The result: For the same carat weight, it appears noticeably larger than a round cut. If you’re interested in an oval engagement ring, you’ll find a wide selection here.

The marquise cut takes it a step further. Because of its extremely elongated shape, it appears larger on the finger than any other cut. However, it is also narrower, which isn't to everyone's taste.

In short: If you want maximum impact on the same budget, go for an oval or marquise cut. If you prefer the classic look, choose a round cut—and perhaps go up half a carat in size.

Cut Carat Weight (1 ct) Effect on the finger
Cylindrical Grinding approx. 6.5 mm in diameter Classic, symmetrical, maximum brilliance
Oval approx. 7 × 5 mm Makes your fingers look longer
Marquise approx. 10 × 5 mm The most impressive, very striking
Cushion approx. 5.5 × 5.5 mm Compact, vintage charm
Emerald approx. 6.5 × 4.5 mm Sleek, Art Deco aesthetic

"We always recommend that our customers visualize the stone on their finger, not on paper. A 1.5-carat oval can look more impressive than a 2-carat round cut. The shape makes all the difference."

Finger size and visual impact

What many people don't know: Ring size completely changes the way a stone looks. A 1-carat stone looks very different on a finger with a ring size of 48 than it does on a finger with a ring size of 58.

The reason is simple: On slender fingers, the stone takes up a proportionally larger area. It appears larger, more prominent, and more eye-catching. On wider fingers, the same stone gets somewhat lost. This isn't a disadvantage—it's just a matter of proportion.

Here is what we've learned from hundreds of consultations:

Ring Size (EU) Recommended Carat Size Why
48–50 0.5–1.0 ct It already looks quite striking on slender fingers
51–53 0.75–1.5 ct Well-balanced proportions, versatile
54–56 1.0 – 2.0 ct Needs to be a little bigger to have the same effect
57+ 1.5–3.0 ct Larger stones maintain the proportions

How the Version Affects the Impact

The setting acts as a silent booster—or a dampener, depending on what you choose.

01

Solitaire Setting

The stone stands alone in the spotlight. No distractions, no optical enlargement. What you see is the stone in its actual size. At Velur, that’s the Élise or the Elegance. Honestly, it’s the cleanest option when you want the stone to speak for itself.

02

Halo Setting

A ring of small stones surrounds the centre stone. This can increase the visible surface area by 30 to 50 percent. A 0.75-carat stone set in a halo can look like a 1.2-carat solitaire. It’s a smart choice if you want maximum impact on a smaller budget. Our muse, Aurora, demonstrates this well.

03

Pavé Band

Small stones along the band draw the eye to the centre stone and create a continuous sparkle. This doesn't make the centre stone look any bigger, but it does make the ring as a whole sparkle more. You'll find this design in our Amoura collection.

04

Bezel Setting

A metal bezel completely encircles the stone. This provides excellent protection, but can make the stone appear slightly smaller because the bezel is made of metal rather than light. Still, it’s a great choice for active women. Check out the Bellezza.

Our Recommendation by Carat Size

When making an informed decision, it’s not just the carat weight that matters, but how the cut, setting, and craftsmanship work together. These four factors will help you compare options:

0,5

0.5 carats: Subtle and delicate

0.5 carats has a delicate, understated look. A simple setting keeps the look understated; a halo or pavé band gives the ring more presence.

1,0

1 carat: Balanced and classic

A 1-carat stone is clearly visible without dominating the entire ring. The cut and setting determine whether the stone appears more classic, modern, or particularly flat.

1,5

1.5 carats: Vivid and clear

1.5 carats makes a striking statement. With elongated cuts, such as oval or marquise, the surface area is spread out more across the finger than with more compact shapes.

2,0

2 Carats: Striking and Expressive

A 2-carat diamond makes a bold statement. Here, balanced proportions, a sturdy setting, and a band that visually complements the center stone are key.

Here's How to Make the Right Choice

Whenever possible, compare carat weights of diamonds with the same cut and setting. That way, you can tell which differences are actually due to weight. Also, consider your budget, everyday wear, and the desired effect—not just the number on the certificate.

In our engagement ring collection, you can compare different designs. The budget guide helps you figure out the right size and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carat Size Comparison

How many millimeters is 1 carat?

A round 1-carat stone measures approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. An oval 1-carat stone measures approximately 7 × 5 mm and therefore appears larger on the finger in terms of surface area.

What carat size looks best on small fingers?

For ring sizes 48–51, even a 0.5- to 1-carat stone looks prominent. The stone takes up more space on the finger and appears proportionally larger than it would on wider fingers.

Does an oval stone look bigger than a round one?

An oval cut can appear larger for the same carat weight because its elongated shape spreads the visible surface area more widely across the finger. The exact effect depends on the proportions and the depth of the cut.

Is a carat the same as size?

No. A carat is a unit of weight (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Two stones with the same carat weight may appear to be different sizes, depending on their cut, proportions, and depth.

What carat size is best for an engagement ring?

The right size depends on the hand, cut, setting, budget, and desired effect. There is no one-size-fits-all “best” carat size—it ranges from subtle to striking.

Does the setting affect how large the stone appears?

Yes, significantly. A halo of small stones makes the centre stone appear larger. A bezel setting can make the stone look slightly smaller, since the metal surrounds the edge. Solitaire settings showcase the stone most directly.
