Selena Gomez's Engagement Ring: Why Everyone Wants a Marquise Cut Ring Now
In December 2024, Selena Gomez showed the world her engagement ring, which instantly set new trends in jewellery. A 4-carat marquise-cut diamond set in yellow gold. Here’s what makes the ring so special—and how you can get the look without spending $200,000.
In a nutshell
Selena Gomez’s engagement ring from Benny Blanco features an approximately 4-carat marquise-cut diamond set on a yellow gold band with pavé shoulders. Estimated value: around $200,000. With a market share of less than 5 percent, this cut was previously a niche choice—Selena’s ring has brought the marquise cut back into the mainstream. If you like the look: At Velur, you’ll find this cut in their own designs starting at 1,460 euros.
The Ring in Detail
December 11, 2024. Selena Gomez posted a few photos and a caption on Instagram: “Forever begins now.” In one of the photos: her left hand, adorned with a ring that the jewellery world immediately scrutinized.
Here’s what we know about the ring: The centre stone is an approximately 4-carat marquise-cut diamond. It is set on a yellow gold band with pavé shoulders —that is, small, delicately set diamonds to the left and right of the main setting. British diamond experts have estimated its value at around $200,000.
What makes the ring more than just an expensive stone is its symbolism. In a song Selena released in 2015—almost ten years before the engagement—she sings a line in which she compares herself to a marquise-cut diamond. Benny Blanco apparently remembered that line exactly. He didn’t choose the ring by chance, but as a direct reference to a lyric she wrote herself. Selena herself later said in a magazine profile that she had already been dreaming of this diamond when she wrote those words.
In September 2025, the couple got married in Santa Barbara. There was also a jewellery detail at the wedding that caught the attention of jewellery editors: her wedding band wasn’t a classic gold band, but a diamond band with a cutout that fits perfectly around the marquise-cut centre stone of her engagement ring. This allows both rings to sit directly against each other without a gap.
The History of the Marquise Cut
The marquise cut is not new. It is a good 250 years old—and it has quite an interesting origin story. According to legend, Louis XV commissioned it around 1745 because he wanted a diamond whose shape resembled the lips of his mistress: Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, later known as the Marquise de Pompadour.
Hence the name. In French, this cut is also called a "navette " — "little boat" — because of its narrow, elongated shape with two pointed ends.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the marquise cut was considered the jewel of the aristocracy. Decorated with smaller accent stones, set in gold, and worn by European nobility. In the 20th century, it lost popularity—the brilliant and princess cuts became the standard for engagement rings because they have fewer sharp edges and are easier to mass-produce.
To be honest: Until 2024, the marquise cut was really more for style-conscious people who deliberately wanted something different from everyone else. Today, less than a year and a half after Selena’s Instagram post, it’s one of our most sought-after cuts.
Other Celebrities with Marquise Engagement Rings
Selena isn't the first celebrity to wear a marquise-cut diamond. Here are a few well-known predecessors:
- In 1968, Jackie Kennedy received a 40-carat marquise-cut diamond from Aristotle Onassis—the famous “Lesotho III.” The stone was so large that, by her own account, she was reluctant to wear it in public.
- Starting in 1998, Victoria Beckham wore a 3-carat marquise-cut diamond from David Beckham. It was the first of what are now more than 15 engagement rings that David has given her over the years—many of them, in keeping with classic British tradition, featuring marquise- or pear-cut diamonds.
- In 1999, Catherine Zeta-Jones received a marquise-cut diamond weighing about 10 carats, set in an antique-style setting, from Michael Douglas.
- Ashlee Simpson also wore a marquise-cut diamond when she got engaged to Pete Wentz in 2008.
The list shows that Marquise never really disappeared—she just kept a low profile. If you choose this style, you'll be joining the ranks of women who deliberately chose not to conform to the norm.
Why the Marquise Cut Is the Most Popular Cut Right Now
Three factors come into play.
First, visibility. Selena Gomez has about 420 million followers on Instagram. The photo from December 11 was shared hundreds of millions of times within 24 hours. In the weeks that followed, we saw a roughly threefold increase in inquiries about the marquise cut through our WhatsApp consultation service. That’s not a subtle effect—it’s a market shift.
Second, its rarity. For a long time, marquise cuts accounted for less than 5 percent of all cut diamonds. That remains the case in 2026. Anyone who chooses a marquise cut is signaling: “I deliberately chose not to go with the standard.” That is precisely what makes this cut appealing to a generation that grew up with brilliant and princess cuts and is seeking something different.
Third, the way it looks on the finger. The marquise cut makes the finger appear longer—it “elongates” the hand. The elongated shape with pointed ends makes a 1-carat stone look like 1.5 carats. That’s not marketing; it’s geometry. At the same carat weight, a marquise cut appears larger than a brilliant or princess cut.
Since early 2025, we’ve seen a clear shift among our female customers: The question is no longer “oval or brilliant,” but increasingly “oval or marquise.” Two years ago, the marquise cut was a niche choice. Now it’s mainstream—but not yet so mainstream that it seems commonplace.
Who looks good in a marquise cut?
The honest answer: almost everyone. But there are some hands on which it looks better than on others.
A marquise-cut diamond looks spectacular on slender, long fingers. The stone's elongated shape accentuates the natural contours of the hand. If your partner has long fingers, a marquise-cut diamond is often the most beautiful choice of all.
On shorter or sturdier fingers, a classic marquise cut (length-to-width ratio of 2.2:1 or higher) can look excessive. In this case, a shorter version with a ratio of 1.8:1 or a “mini-marquise” under 1 carat works well—the effect is more subtle, but still noticeable.
A practical tip from our workshop: Marquise-cut stones have two pointed ends, which are mechanically the most delicate parts of the stone. For active wearers (those who play sports, do manual labor, or have small children), we recommend a V-shaped bezel at the points instead of an open setting. This protects the stone without altering its appearance.
The Velur-Marquise: Rêverie Eternity Band
We spotted the marquise trend early on and incorporated it into our collection. Our model that most closely resembles the Selena style is called the Rêverie Eternity Band Marquise.
The design: A marquise-cut stone as the centre stone, set on an eternity band—that is, a ring that is set all the way around with small stones. This isn’t the exact same design as Selena’s ring (hers is a classic pavé-set band with shoulders, not a full-circle eternity style), but the look on the hand is similar: a dramatic centre stone, sparkle on the sides as well, and classic yellow gold.
With us, you can choose between moissanite and lab-grown diamonds as the centre stone. Both are GRA- or IGI-certified. Moissanite actually has a higher fire than diamond—the rainbow reflections you see in the pictures of Selena’s ring are more pronounced in a moissanite. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural diamonds and are also an honest choice.
The ring is available in 14k yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold. For the Selena look, we recommend yellow gold—white gold would lose the warm, sunny character of the original.
Here’s an important limitation of the Eternity style that we’d like to mention up front: Because the stones are set all the way around, resizing after the fact is limited. We can adjust the ring by half a size, but no more than that. So before you order, it’s worth taking a look at our ring size guide —or giving us a call; we’re here to help.

What we do promise is a ring in the same style, featuring Velur's signature design, with certified gemstones, a lifetime warranty, and a 60-day return policy.
If you don't want to go with the Eternity style (due to the resizing restriction) or are looking for a more classic marquise solitaire design, check out our other marquise models—the Rêverie Solitaire or the Rêverie Éternelle offer a similar look without the Eternity restriction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How big is Selena Gomez's engagement ring?
The centre stone is a marquise-cut diamond weighing approximately 4 carats. British diamond experts have estimated its total value at around $200,000. The stone is set in a yellow gold band with pavé shoulders (small diamonds on either side of the main setting).
What is a marquise cut?
An elongated diamond cut with two tapered ends. Also known as a navette (“little boat”). The cut originated around 1745 at the French court under Louis XV and is named after the Marquise de Pompadour. Marquise cuts currently account for less than 5 percent of all cut diamonds—a figure that has been on the rise since 2025.
Does the marquise cut suit every hand?
The marquise cut looks best on longer, slender fingers and makes them appear even longer. For shorter fingers, a marquise cut with a lower length-to-width ratio (for example, 1.8:1 instead of 2.2:1) can be just as flattering. If you’re not sure, send us a photo of your hand on WhatsApp, and we’ll give you our honest opinion on what looks best.
Which other celebrities have worn a marquise-cut engagement ring?
In 1998, Victoria Beckham received a 3-carat marquise-cut diamond from David Beckham. After her second wedding in 1968, Jackie Kennedy wore the 40-carat “Lesotho III.” Catherine Zeta-Jones (1999) and Ashlee Simpson (2008) also wore this cut for their engagements. The list is short but includes prominent names—which has contributed to the marquise cut’s status as a style icon.
How much does a marquise engagement ring cost at Velur?
Our marquise-cut models start at 1,460 euros for the Rêverie Éternelle. The Rêverie Eternity Band Marquise—which most closely resembles the Selena look—starts at 1,770 euros for 1 carat. You can choose between moissanite or lab-grown diamonds; both are certified and come with a lifetime warranty.
What should you look for in a marquise cut?
Three points: First, the length-to-width ratio—the classic range is 1.8 to 2.2 to 1. Second, the symmetry of the tips—both ends must be exactly centreed; otherwise, the stone appears lopsided. Third, the quality of the cut: poorly cut marquise cuts often exhibit a dark “bow-tie” effect in the centre. At Velur, we personally check this before every shipment.
