Engagement Ring: Which Hand Is the Right One?
Left, right, or switch after the wedding? The answer depends on where you live. Here's an overview.
In a nutshell
In Germany, you wear the engagement ring on the ring finger of your left hand. After the wedding, it moves to the right hand, where it is worn before the wedding band. Different rules apply in other countries: In the U.S., it stays on the left; in Russia, it goes directly on the right. You’ll find an overview for 15 countries below.
You have the ring. Or you're planning to buy one. And now you're wondering: Which hand? Which finger? Is there a wrong choice?
No, there aren't. But there are traditions that have endured for centuries. And they vary from country to country. What's taken for granted in Germany raises eyebrows in the U.S.
We'll clear this up right here. Straight to the point, with a table covering 15 countries and specific tips on how to wear your engagement ring and wedding band together later on.
The Rule in Germany
Short answer: Left hand, ring finger.
In Germany, Austria, and most German-speaking regions, you wear the engagement ring on the ring finger of your left hand. That's the fourth finger, between the middle finger and the little finger.
Why the left hand? More on that in a moment. But first, the most important thing: After the wedding, the engagement ring is moved to the right hand. The wedding band is also worn on the right hand. The engagement ring is then worn in front of the wedding band, as what’s known as a “front ring.”
So: Engagement = left. Marriage = right. That's the German tradition.
Summary for Germany
Before the wedding: Engagement ring on the ring finger of the left hand.
After the wedding: The engagement ring is moved to the right hand, worn before the wedding band.
Wedding band: Ring finger of the right hand.
Why on the left, anyway? The Vena Amoris
The ancient Romans believed in the Vena Amoris, the “vein of love”—a vein that supposedly runs directly from the ring finger of the left hand to the heart. That’s why it’s the ring finger. That’s why it’s on the left.
Medically speaking, that's nonsense. There is no specific vein that runs only from the ring finger to the heart. All fingers have similar blood vessels. But the symbolism has endured—for over 2,000 years.
And to be honest: It doesn't matter whether that vein exists or not. It's the gesture that counts. The ring on the ring finger means something because we give it that meaning—not because anatomy dictates it.
"The Vena Amoris is a myth. But a beautiful one. And sometimes the most beautiful traditions are the ones based on stories, not facts."

Planning to propose abroad? Be sure to learn about local customs beforehand. In some cultures, the engagement ring is placed directly on the right hand. This can be confusing if you’re used to doing it differently. If in doubt, ask us on WhatsApp—we’re happy to help.
Now you know which hand. Is the ring the only thing missing?

That's the question we hear most often. The ring has served its purpose. The engagement is over. Now what?
Three options:
Option 1: Pre-cut ring (the most popular option)
The engagement ring goes on the right hand and is worn before the wedding band. This is the most common practice in Germany. Both rings are worn on the same finger, with the engagement ring closer to the fingertip.
Option 2: Keep your left hand
Some women simply wear their engagement ring on the left hand. Wedding ring on the right, engagement ring on the left. Two hands, two rings, two meanings. That’s not against the rules. There’s no “ring police.”
Option 3: Wear it on a chain
If you don't want to wear the ring on your finger (or have a job where rings get in the way), you can wear it on a delicate gold chain around your neck. Close to your heart. And the Vena Amoris would be pleased, too.
Pre-wedding ring combination: An engagement ring worn on the right hand before the wedding ring.
What's Possible After the Wedding
After the wedding, the engagement ring can be worn as a stackable ring on the right hand, remain on the left hand, or be worn on a chain. There is no right or wrong way to do it.
Wearing an Engagement Ring and a Wedding Band Together
If you wear both rings on the same finger, they should go well together. They don't have to be identical, but they should complement each other. Here are three rules we recommend based on our experience:
Same gold colour
Yellow gold engagement rings with yellow gold. Rose gold with rose gold. White gold engagement rings with platinum engagement rings also work. But yellow gold next to white gold usually looks a bit jarring. Not wrong, but jarring.
Be aware of the bandwidth
A delicate engagement ring with a 1.5-mm band width paired with a 5-mm-wide wedding band? That clashes. Choose rings whose band widths differ by no more than 1–2 mm.
Customise Profile
Round profiles (Comfort Fit) fit together better than a round ring next to a flat one. If your engagement ring has a tall stone, you'll need a wedding band with a slight curve so that it sits flush.

Do men wear engagement rings?
In Germany? Not very often. But it's becoming more common.
In Scandinavia, it has been common for decades for both partners to wear an engagement ring. The same is true in Brazil and Argentina. In Germany, there is no tradition in favor of this, but neither is there one against it.
What we’re seeing: More and more couples are opting for simple partner rings for their engagement. No stone, no sparkle. Just a band that says: We belong together. The classic engagement ring with a stone is then reserved for the woman, but the man wears his own symbol.
Our advice: Do what feels right for you. Traditions are a guide, not a rule.
Measuring Your Ring Finger: How to Find the Right Size
Now you know which hand. But what size? It gets tricky, especially if you're buying the ring in secret.
Three methods that work:
Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring
Take a ring that she wears on her ring finger. Measure the inner diameter with a ruler. Diameter × 3.14 = circumference = ring size. Example: 17.5 mm diameter × 3.14 = 54.95 → ring size 55.
Method 2: String Test
Wrap a piece of string around her ring finger (while she's asleep, if you're brave enough). Mark the spot and measure the length. That's the circumference, and therefore the ring size.
Method 3: Ask Your Girlfriend
To be honest, it's the most reliable method. Your best friend usually knows. Or she finds out without making a big deal of it.
Don't Panic If You Get the Wrong Size
At Velur, you get 180 days of free resizing. If the ring doesn't fit, just send it back and we'll resize it. Free of charge. It's not unusual to have a ring resized.
