Engagement Ring Engraving: The Best Ideas and What You Need to Know
From timeless classics to Latin sayings to modern symbols: Here's how to make your ring truly unique.
In a nutshell
An engraving turns your engagement ring into a truly one-of-a-kind piece. The most popular options include names and dates, personal sayings, or the GPS coordinates of a special place. Laser engravings are particularly delicate and are offered free of charge by many jewellers. Be sure to check the character limit (usually 20 to 30 characters) and choose a font that matches the style of your ring.
An engagement ring is already a powerful symbol. But an engraving on the inside makes it something that belongs only to the two of you—something no one else can see, but you both know is there. This hidden message is like a secret between two people, inscribed in the metal that symbolizes your bond.
Whether you 're choosing your engagement ring or want to personalise an existing ring, this guide has everything you need to know about engravings—from the best sayings and the right technique to costs and practical tips to help you find the perfect inscription.
Why an Engraving Makes All the Difference
A ring can be beautiful. But an engraving makes it personal. It transforms a piece of jewellery into a keepsake that tells a story. Every time you take off the ring and see the inside, you’ll be reminded of that one moment, that one person, that one promise.
The tradition of engraving rings dates back centuries. As early as the Middle Ages, so-called “posy rings” were engraved with short love poems on the inside. Today, the technique has evolved, but the idea has remained the same: an invisible message intended only for the wearer.
What makes an engraving special is its intimacy. Unlike the stone or the setting, which everyone can admire, the engraving remains hidden. It is a private promise, a secret shared between two people. And that is exactly what makes it so powerful.
"The most beautiful engravings are the ones that tell a real story. It's not the most elaborate phrase that counts, but the meaning behind it."

A Comparison of Engraving Techniques
Not all engravings are the same. The technique used affects the appearance of the lettering, its durability, and the price. In Germany, three methods are primarily used, and they differ fundamentally in how they work.
Laser Engraving
Laser engraving is the most commonly used technique for engagement rings today. A high-energy laser beam vaporizes the material on the surface down to a specified depth. The process is non-contact, which is a major advantage, especially for delicate or very narrow rings. The result: an extremely fine, uniform engraving with razor-sharp details. Even complex symbols, fingerprints, or sound waves can be reproduced using this method.
Diamond Engraving
In diamond engraving, a tip made of industrial diamond—the hardest natural material, with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale—is pressed against the inside of the ring. The resulting scratch mark is deeper than that produced by laser engraving and can be felt to the touch. The quality depends heavily on the CNC machine used. High-quality machines produce a clean, even result, while less expensive machines can result in uneven lines.
Hand engraving
Hand engraving is the most traditional and labor-intensive method. An experienced engraver manually guides the graver across the ring. The result has a unique, hand-drawn character that cannot be reproduced by machine. However, this technique is significantly more expensive and is mainly offered for wedding bands or particularly high-quality one-of-a-kind pieces.
| Criterion | Laser Engraving | Diamond Engraving | Hand engraving |

The Most Beautiful Engraving Ideas for Your Engagement Ring
Choosing the right engraving is a very personal decision. What’s perfect for one couple might not be right for another at all. Here you’ll find a selection of the most popular and creative ideas, sorted by category.
Classics That Never Fail
By far the most popular engraving in Germany is the combination of a name and a date. There’s a good reason for this: it’s timeless, personal, and will remain just as meaningful decades from now as it was on the very first day. Other classics include initials with a heart symbol between them (e.g., “A ♡ F”), the date you met or the date of the proposal, or simply “Yours Forever.”
Latin Sayings with Depth
Latin inscriptions lend the ring a special elegance and a touch of timelessness. The most popular Latin saying is “Tempus fugit, amor manet,” which translates to “Time passes, love remains.” Also very popular are “Omnia vincit amor” (Love conquers all) and “In omne tempus” (For all time). These sayings not only sound beautiful, but they also carry a philosophical depth that perfectly matches the significance of an engagement ring.
Heartfelt German Sayings
If you prefer to express yourself in your own language, you’ll find beautiful phrases in German as well. “You are my most beautiful thought” is a phrase that’s hard to beat in its simplicity. Other favorites: “My heart belongs to you,” “One in our hearts,” or “Every second with you.” This is especially beautiful for couple’s rings: when each ring bears part of a phrase, for example, “Two hearts” on one and “one beat” on the other.
Modern and Creative Ideas
Laser engraving has opened up entirely new possibilities. GPS coordinates of a special place—such as the spot where you had your first date or where the marriage proposal took place—have become extremely popular in recent years. It gets even more personal with a partner’s fingerprint, a soundwave of the spoken words “I love you,” or the constellation of stars on the day you met. Some couples even have a tiny QR code engraved that links to a shared playlist or a private photo.
By the way: If you wear an engagement ring with a lab-grown diamond, it’s especially worth having it engraved—it makes this already sustainable piece of jewellery even more personal.

What You Need to Know Before Engraving
Before you decide on an engraving, there are a few practical things you should know. An engraving is permanent, and while it is possible to make changes later, it requires some effort.
Character Limit and Ring Width
The number of characters that fit on the inside depends on three factors: the ring size (the larger the circumference, the more space there is), the ring width (wider rings also allow for multi-line engravings), and the font size. As a rule of thumb, for an average ring size of 52 to 56, about 20 to 30 characters will fit on the inside. So it’s better to keep your engraving short and to the point rather than too long.
Font and Readability
Not every font is suitable for engraving on a ring. Highly ornate fonts can become illegible on such a small surface. Clean, elegant fonts—such as a simple cursive or a classic serif font—work best. Many jewellers offer a preview feature that lets you see the result before the engraving is done.
Time of Engraving
The engraving can be done when you buy the ring or at a later time. If you’re buying the ring as a surprise and aren’t sure what to have engraved yet, you can also have it engraved after the proposal. That way, you can decide together what to have inscribed on the inside.
Note the size adjustment
If the ring needs to be resized later, the engraving may be damaged in the process. In most cases, it will need to be redone after a resizing. This isn't a big deal, but it's something to keep in mind when planning. At Velur, we offer free resizing within 180 days.
Still not sure what engraving to choose? Order your ring without an engraving first, and have it engraved together after the proposal. That way, the engraving becomes a shared experience. Feel free to message us on WhatsApp if you have any questions.
How much does it cost to have an engagement ring engraved?
The good news: An engraving doesn't have to be expensive. Many jewellers offer free laser engraving with the purchase of a ring. Costs vary depending on the technique, the amount of work involved, and the provider.
Retroactive engraving typically costs between 20 and 60 euros, depending on the complexity and the technique chosen. Hand engraving is the most expensive option, starting at around 80 to 150 euros, as it is done by hand by an experienced engraver. Special requests, such as fingerprints or soundwaves, may incur additional costs depending on the provider.
Important to know: The price doesn't necessarily reflect the quality. A well-executed laser engraving can be just as beautiful and durable as an expensive hand engraving. What matters most is the quality of the machine and the jeweller's experience.

FAQ on Engagement Ring Engraving
Many jewellers include laser engraving free of charge in the purchase price. Additional engraving costs between 20 and 60 euros, depending on the complexity of the work. Hand engraving is significantly more expensive, starting at around 80 to 150 euros.
Most rings made of gold, platinum, or silver can be engraved without any problems. Very narrow rings (less than 2 mm wide) offer less space, but can still be engraved using laser engraving. Materials such as titanium or tungsten require special laser technology.
Laser engraving produces the finest lettering and is a non-contact process, which is particularly advantageous for delicate rings. Diamond engraving creates a deeper engraving that can be felt to the touch. Both techniques have their merits. The choice depends on the desired result.
That depends on the ring size, the ring width, and the font you choose. As a general rule, for an average ring size (52 to 56), about 20 to 30 characters will fit on the inside. With wider rings or smaller fonts, longer texts are also possible.
Yes, an existing engraving can usually be polished away and replaced with a new one. This is easier with laser engravings than with deep diamond engravings. However, a small amount of material is removed in the process, which may slightly change the ring size.
An interior engraving removes a minimal amount of material, which can increase the ring size by a fraction of a millimeter. In practice, this difference is not noticeable. However, if the ring needs to be resized later, the engraving may need to be redone.
