Carat is not a measure of quality—it's a matter of character.

Karat describes only one thing: how much pure gold is in the alloy. More fine gold results in a warmer, richer tone—and a softer metal. Less fine gold makes the alloy lighter in color, harder, and more durable.

That's why there's no such thing as "better" gold. There's only the gold that suits your everyday life, your skin tone, and your budget.

The Honest Start

Our lightest and hardest gold alloy—solid, not plated. Whether you work with your hands a lot or are watching your budget, this offers real gold without compromising on craftsmanship.

The Sweet Spot

Warm color, high durability for everyday wear, and a reasonable price: 585 gold is the alloy our couples choose most often—and the one we recommend for everyday wear.

  • A warm, classic shade of gold
  • Excellent resistance to everyday wear and tear
  • Our most popular alloy

The Rich Classics

Three-quarters pure gold: The tone becomes deeper, and the metal feels noticeably heavier. 750 gold is the traditional choice in haute joaillerie—slightly softer, yet unmistakably warm.

Solid, not plated

The same metal through and through.

Every Velur engagement and wedding ring is crafted from solid metal: yellow gold or white gold, with the same alloy throughout—no plating that could wear off. What you see on day one is what you’ll still be wearing twenty years from now.

Whether the classic, warm tone of yellow gold suits you or the cool, modern look of white gold is purely a matter of personal style—we craft both from the same solid alloy of your choice.

950 platinum

Natural white. Forever.

With a fineness of 95%, platinum is the purest metal we work with—and the only one that is naturally white. Its color is consistent throughout: it cannot fade and never needs to be refreshed.

Platinum is denser and heavier than gold; it is considered particularly gentle on the skin and develops a delicate, silky patina over the years—for many, the most beautiful proof of a ring that has been worn. You’ll find it as a separate alloy option in most of our engagement rings.

Our Mission

The alloy determines how your ring will age over time. That's why we take it just as seriously as the stone.

What about gold vermeil?

Genuinely gold-plated — in the right place.

Gold vermeil is solid 925 sterling silver with a thick layer of real gold—the highest-quality form of gold plating. At Velur, you’ll find it only where it makes sense: on select pieces of jewelry, such as our Klee collection.

When it comes to engagement and wedding rings—which are worn every day for a lifetime—we consider only solid gold or platinum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Precious Metals, Explained in a Nutshell.

Which type of gold is best for an engagement ring?

The one that's right for you: 14-karat (585) is the all-around choice, combining a warm color with durability for everyday wear—our most popular alloy. 18-karat (750) has a richer, more substantial look but is slightly softer. 10-karat (417) is the hardest and most budget-friendly option. All three are solid gold.

What do 585 and 750 mean?

Fineness in parts per thousand: 585 gold consists of 58.5% pure gold (= 14 karats), while 750 gold consists of 75% pure gold (= 18 karats). The rest is the alloy, which gives the metal its hardness and specific color. Learn more in the Karat Guide.

Is platinum better than white gold?

Different, not better: Platinum is naturally white, denser, and heavier—its color runs throughout the entire metal and never needs to be refreshed. White gold is lighter and more affordable. We craft both in solid form; for most of our engagement rings, you can choose 950 platinum directly as the alloy.

Is 10-karat gold gaining popularity?

Unlike gold plating, solid gold never loses its color. Due to its higher alloy content, 10k gold may darken slightly with everyday wear; a soft cloth is all it takes to restore its luster. You can find tips on this in our care guide.

What is gold vermeil?

Solid 925 sterling silver with a thick layer of real gold—the finest form of gold plating. At Velur, we use vermeil only for select pieces of jewelry, such as the Klee Collection. We craft engagement and wedding rings exclusively from solid gold or platinum.
