The short answer

A Flawless diamond is graded FL. Under 10x magnification, a trained grader can detect neither internal inclusions nor external surface features. FL is therefore the highest grade on the classic diamond clarity scale. Velur can source certified FL lab-grown diamonds in all standard cut shapes and custom sizes. We’ll discuss current availability, the certificate, and the appropriate ring setting with you personally via WhatsApp.

At first glance, “Flawless” sounds like a marketing term. When it comes to diamonds, however, it’s a specific, verifiable measure of quality. Two letters on the certificate are key: FL. They stand for the highest clarity grade—not just a stone that looks clean without a loupe.

This distinction is important because terms such as “loupe-clean,” “eye-clean,” or “nearly flawless” are also used in the jewellery trade. While such descriptions can be helpful, they are no substitute for a gemological clarity grade. Anyone specifically looking for a flawless diamond should look for a certificate that explicitly states “FL” in the clarity field.

What does "flawless" mean when it comes to a diamond?

Clarity describes whether a diamond has internal features, known as inclusions, or external features, known as blemishes. For standardized grading, the stone is examined under 10x magnification. According to the GIA clarity scale, a diamond is graded FL if a trained grader cannot detect any inclusions or surface features at this magnification.

This does not mean that an FL diamond must be free of any irregularities at the atomic level. The grading follows a defined testing standard. It describes the findings under 10x magnification, not under unlimited magnification in the laboratory.

Internal and External Characteristics—The Crucial Difference
Schematic representation

Schematic diamond with an internal inclusion A dark spot within the outline of the diamond marks an internal feature.

Inclusion

A feature inside the diamond, such as a tiny crystal or a growth structure.

Schematic diamond with an external surface feature A small line on the upper facet marks a distinguishing feature.

Blemish

A feature on the surface, such as a small polishing mark or a scratch.

For a reliable FL value, the degree of purity must be specified in the stone's report.

The GIA describes flawless diamonds as exceptionally rare. Even with lab-grown diamonds, a "Flawless" (FL) grade is not a given: The controlled manufacturing process does not automatically prevent growth features or marks that may arise during cutting and polishing.

What is the difference between FL, IF, VVS, and VS?

FL and IF are often mentioned together, but they are not the same thing. In the case of Internally Flawless (IF), no internal inclusions are visible under 10x magnification; however, minor external surface features may be present. In the case of FL, neither type of feature is present when examined under these conditions.

The Diamond Clarity Scale at a Glance
From the highest to the lowest classical level

  1. 01FL

No features visible at 10× magnification

  2. 02IF

No inclusions; minor external features possible

  3. 03VVS

Tiny inclusions are very difficult to detect

  4. 04VS

Small inclusions visible under 10× magnification

  5. 05SI

Inclusions clearly visible at 10× magnification

  6. 06I

Characteristics can influence the visible effect

The order indicates the gemological clarity grade. It is not a scale for brilliance: a higher clarity grade does not automatically guarantee more sparkle.

Level Findings at 10× magnification Classification
FL No visible internal or external characteristics Highest purity level and highest certification rating
IF No inclusions; minor surface features are possible Directly below FL and usually visually indistinguishable from FL
VVS1 / VVS2 Tiny inclusions are hard to spot, even for graders Very high purity range with a subtle, visible effect
VS1 / VS2 Small inclusions are visible under magnification Depending on the stone, it still appears clean even without a magnifying glass

Velur's standard quality range for lab-grown diamonds is already in a very clean range. Our guide to diamond clarity from VVS1 to VS1 explains why these grades are often sufficient for the visual impact of an engagement ring. FL is an additional option for people who place importance on the highest certification grade itself.

FL is not the same as “eye-clean”

“Eye-clean” means that no distracting inclusions are visible without magnification. This can also apply to a VS or VVS diamond. FL, on the other hand, describes a more stringent, documented finding at 10x magnification.

Does a flawless diamond sparkle more brightly?

Not necessarily. A diamond’s play of light depends primarily on how its facets are proportioned, cut, and aligned with one another. A superbly cut VVS or VS1 diamond can appear more vibrant than an FL diamond with less-than-ideal proportions.

Without a magnifying glass, the visible difference between FL and IF—or a carefully selected VVS diamond—is usually very slight. The added value of FL therefore lies less in a guaranteed extra sparkle. It lies in the rarity of the grading, the clarity of the certificate, and the personal desire to choose the highest rated grade for one of the 4Cs.

Velur's Recommendation

First, prioritize a compelling cut, harmonious proportions, and a suitable colour. If these characteristics are right and the highest clarity grade is important to you, FL becomes a deliberate upgrade rather than a substitute for the other quality factors.

If you have a fixed budget, you should compare both options: an FL diamond in your desired size and a VVS or VS1 diamond with slightly more carat weight. Our guide to buying lab-grown diamonds explains how colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight work together.

Why Choose a Flawless Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond with the same crystal structure and the same basic optical properties as a natural diamond. The difference lies in how it is formed. You can find out more about the processes and characteristics in our guide, “What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

At FL, the ability to select a lab-grown diamond according to your specifications is combined with the highest classic clarity grade. This may be a good fit for three reasons:

01

The certificate level is part of the ring's significance

Some couples want the report to indicate not just a very high purity level, but the highest one. The value then lies in the documented decision and its personal significance.

02

The central stone should be selected based on clear criteria

FL establishes a clear clarity standard. Nevertheless, the stone must also meet high standards in terms of cut, colour, symmetry, polish, dimensions, and brilliance.

03

A configuration that is rarely available is being specifically sought after

FL lab-grown diamonds are not listed as a standard option for every ring in the online store. You can use the custom order feature to search for the desired shape, size, and setting.

What shapes and sizes does Velur offer?

Velur can source certified FL lab-grown diamonds in all standard cuts and custom sizes upon request. These include round, oval, radiant, emerald, elongated cushion, marquise, pear, and princess. We can also specifically evaluate other available fancy shapes.

FL is not limited to a specific grinding shape

When it comes to carat weight, you are not limited to the selection options on a single product page. Please let us know your desired size or a range, such as 1.5 to 2 carats. We will then check our current inventory and present you with suitable stones. Since FL is a strict quality standard, the selection may vary in size depending on the shape, dimensions, and carat weight. We therefore always confirm specific availability for each individual inquiry.

The shape alone is not enough. For oval, marquise, or pear cuts, we examine the “bow-tie” pattern, for example; for emerald cuts, a calm, open facet structure is key; and for radiant and cushion cuts, the length-to-width ratio and the facet pattern play a major role. An FL certificate does not replace this visual assessment.

The selected stone can then be designed with a suitable Velur setting. You can start with our engagement rings featuring lab-grown diamonds or submit a custom ring request. We’ll verify that the stone’s exact dimensions fit the desired setting before providing a quote.

What certificate certifies an FL lab-grown diamond?

The report must identify the stone as "laboratory-grown" and list "FL" in the clarity field. In addition, the report number, carat weight, dimensions, colour, cut, polish, and symmetry should clearly match the stone being offered. Before placing your order, you can verify the report number and the digital report.

Four Things to Consider Before Making a Purchase
  1. "FL" is explicitly listed in the "Purity" fieldIF, VVS, or a general premium designation are not the same thing.
  2. The lab-grown diamond is clearly labeledThe report must clearly indicate that the diamond originated in a laboratory.
  3. The identity matches the stoneThe report number, dimensions, and carat weight must match those in the offer.
  4. The remaining quality factors are evaluated separatelyCut, proportions, colour, and light output remain separate selection criteria.

For newly graded colourless lab-grown diamonds, the GIA has stopped using the traditional letter-and-number scale entirely as of October 2025, instead using the general designations “Premium” and “Standard.” The GIA itself describes this change. If you specifically want to see “FL” on the current lab-grown diamond certificate, you must therefore choose a lab report that continues to list the traditional clarity grade separately—for example, a suitable IGI report.

Our article on diamond certificates and the IGI explains what information you’ll find in the report. The key point to remember is that the certificate serves as the stone’s identity and quality description. A real-life video and an analysis of its proportions also show how the stone looks.

  • FL must be explicitly stated: IF, VVS1, or “Premium” are not alternative spellings for FL.
  • Laboratory-grown diamonds must be identified: The report must clearly indicate their origin as "laboratory-grown."
  • The information in the report must match: the dimensions, weight, and, if applicable, the laser engraving must correspond to the stone being offered.
  • Cut must be evaluated separately: FL assesses clarity, not necessarily light performance or proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Flawless Diamonds

What is the highest clarity grade for diamonds?

FL, which stands for "Flawless," is the highest grade on the classic diamond clarity scale. A trained grader cannot detect any internal inclusions or external surface characteristics when viewed under 10x magnification.

What is the difference between FL and IF?

For FL, neither inclusions nor surface features are visible at 10x magnification. For IF, no inclusions are visible, although small external surface features may be present. FL is therefore one grade above IF.

Can Velur Flawless offer lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. Velur can source certified FL lab-grown diamonds in all standard cuts and custom sizes upon request. Since inventory varies depending on the cut and carat weight, we’ll confirm availability, certification, and price personally via WhatsApp.

Are Flawless lab-grown diamonds available in every shape and size?

FL lab-grown diamonds are available in all standard shapes and a wide range of carat sizes. Velur can help you find the exact combination you’re looking for. The specific selection depends on current market availability as well as your desired dimensions, proportions, and certificate details.

Is a Flawless diamond visibly more beautiful than a VVS or VS1?

Not necessarily. Without a magnifying glass, the difference in clarity is often barely noticeable. Cut and proportions are crucial for brilliance and the play of light. FL primarily stands for the highest documented clarity grade and its rarity.

How can I tell if the FL purity rating is genuine?

The certificate must explicitly state "FL" in the clarity field. Terms such as "eye-clean," "loupe-clean," "IF," or "Premium" do not constitute equivalent proof. Also, check whether the report number, dimensions, and carat weight correspond to the lab-grown diamond being offered.
