In a nutshell

The new Velur Promise rings combine genuine birthstones with a choice between gold vermeil (925 sterling silver with a thick 14K gold plating, starting at €309) and 14K solid gold (585 gold throughout). Available in two designs: Muse Eternité (classic three-stone ring) and Muse Aurora (elegant halo ring). Both are intended as gifts, promise rings, or personal statements.

What is a promise ring, and why is it so popular right now?

A promise ring is more than just a beautiful piece of jewellery. It is a symbol of connection, a silent promise between two people. Unlike an engagement ring, it does not represent a specific promise of marriage, but rather the depth of a relationship, shared values, and the desire to grow together.

The trend originated in the U.S., but has also gained tremendous popularity in Germany in recent years. More and more couples are looking for a way to celebrate their relationship without immediately taking the step toward engagement. A promise ring fills exactly that gap: It’s personal, meaningful, and expresses what words sometimes cannot.

The promise ring is especially popular as a gift for an anniversary, a birthday, or simply as a spontaneous gesture of love. And when this ring also features a genuine birthstone, it becomes something truly unique: a piece of jewellery that not only looks beautiful but also tells a personal story.

"An engagement ring is a very personal symbol of love and commitment and marks a meaningful milestone in your relationship."

Gold Vermeil Explained: What's Behind This Material?

Gold vermeil (pronounced "wermej") is not your typical gold plating. It is one of the highest-quality methods for finishing jewellery with real gold, and it differs fundamentally from what you might know as "gold-plated jewellery."

The formula is clearly defined: A core of 925 sterling silver is coated with a layer of genuine 14K gold at least 2.5 micrometers thick. That may sound technical, but the difference is enormous. Ordinary gold-plated costume jewellery often has only 0.5 micrometers of gold on a brass or copper core. Gold vermeil, therefore, has a gold plating that is up to five times thicker and is based on a precious metal rather than a cheap alloy.

Cross-Section Comparison: Gold vermeil with a 925 sterling silver core and a 14K gold plating vs. solid 14K gold throughout

What does that mean for you? Gold vermeil looks like real gold, feels like real gold, and is hypoallergenic and nickel-free. The sterling silver core makes the ring lighter than solid gold, which many people find more comfortable for everyday wear. And the price? Significantly more affordable than solid gold, without having to compromise on quality or aesthetics.

Which ring is right for you?

The choice between gold vermeil and 14K solid gold isn't a matter of "better" or "worse." It depends on what you want the ring to express and how you plan to wear it.

01

Are you looking for a personalised gift?

Gold vermeil is the perfect choice. You get the look of real gold, a genuine birthstone, and a piece of jewellery that feels luxurious. Starting at €309, it’s a gift that makes an impression without breaking the bank. Especially popular: the recipient’s birthstone in the Muse Aurora design, because the halo effect really makes the stone shine.

02

You'd like a ring to wear every day

If you plan to wear the ring every day, we recommend 14K solid gold. It retains its colour for a lifetime, is more durable for everyday wear, and feels more luxurious due to its greater weight. The Muse Eternité in 14K gold with your birthstone is a classic you’ll never have to take off.

03

You want to try on some fine jewellery

Gold vermeil is the perfect way to get started in the world of fine jewellery. You can try out different stones and designs without having to commit right away. Many of our customers start with vermeil and later upgrade to solid gold once they’ve found their favourite birthstone.

04

You're looking for a meaningful investment

14K solid gold is not only beautiful, but also an investment. The price of gold rises over the long term, and a ring made of 585 gold retains its material value. Combined with a rare birthstone such as tanzanite or emerald, it becomes a piece of jewellery with genuine collector's value.

Care Guide: How to Keep Your Ring Looking Beautiful

Whether it's gold vermeil or 14K solid gold, with the right care, your ring will last much longer. Here are the most important rules for both materials:

Care Tip Gold Vermeil 14K Solid Gold
When washing your hands Remove the ring Can keep up
Perfume & Lotions Apply first, then put on the ring Apply first, then put on the ring
Sports & Swimming Always Lose Weight Lose Weight More Effectively

Velur Tip

The golden rule for gold vermeil: Your ring should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. This will help you avoid contact with chemicals and significantly extend the life of the gold plating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is gold vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced "wermej") is a high-quality gold-plating technique in which 925 sterling silver is coated with a layer of genuine 14K gold that is at least 2.5 micrometers thick. Unlike standard gold-plated jewellery, the gold layer in vermeil is significantly thicker, and the base metal is always sterling silver, making the jewellery hypoallergenic and nickel-free.

How long does gold vermeil last?

With normal care, gold vermeil lasts 1 to 3 years before the gold plating visibly wears off. Its lifespan depends on how often the ring is worn and whether it comes into contact with water, perfume, or chemicals. With proper care (removing the ring when washing your hands, storing it in a dry place), vermeil can last significantly longer.

What is the difference between gold vermeil and gold-plated jewellery?

The main difference lies in the thickness of the gold layer and the base metal. Vermeil has a gold layer at least 2.5 micrometers thick over sterling silver. Regular gold-plated jewellery often has only 0.5 micrometers of gold over brass or copper. Vermeil is therefore up to five times thicker than gold-plated jewellery and is hypoallergenic.

Can I wear my birthstone for someone else?

Absolutely! Many people choose to wear the birthstone of their partner, child, or a loved one. This makes birthstone jewellery a particularly personal gift that symbolizes an emotional connection.

What is a promise ring, and when do you give one?

A promise ring is a symbol of commitment and shared plans for the future. It is often given before an engagement—for example, on an anniversary, a birthday, or as a spontaneous gesture of love. Unlike an engagement ring, it does not signify a specific promise of marriage, but rather the depth and sincerity of a relationship.

Is the extra cost for 14K solid gold worth it?

If you're looking for a ring that will last a lifetime and never lose its luster, 14K solid gold is the right choice. It's an investment that can even increase in value over time. Gold vermeil is the perfect choice if you're looking for a beautiful piece of jewellery at a more affordable price—for example, as a gift or to try out a new style.

Are the birthstones real?

Yes, all 12 birthstones in the Velur Promise Ring Collection are genuine gemstones. From garnet to sapphire to tanzanite: Each stone is carefully selected and set by hand into the ring.
