What to Look for in Heart-Shaped Diamonds
Take a close look at the symmetry and the notch
There is no single standard cut grade for heart-shaped diamonds. Pay attention to symmetry and polish, and check the image to see if the two curves are the same size, the notch is clearly defined, and the point is centered. The classic length-to-width ratio is 0.95 to 1.05, so that the shape remains recognizable as a heart and does not appear elongated.
Color and Clarity in the Heart Cut
The tip concentrates the body color, similar to a drop cut. Grades G through H are acceptable; for yellow gold, a grade lower is also acceptable. The brilliant facets conceal inclusions well, which is why VS2 and often SI1 diamonds are eye-clean. The only important thing is that there are no inclusions at the culet or directly in the tip.
Size in millimeters per carat
A 1-carat heart measures approximately 6.5 × 6.5 mm; a 1.5-carat heart measures approximately 7.4 × 7.4 mm; and a 2-carat heart measures approximately 8.2 × 8.2 mm. Below about 0.7 carats, the shape becomes harder to recognize because the notch and curves become very small. For a clearly recognizable heart shape, one carat is a good minimum size.

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
