Oval Diamonds

An oval is an elongated brilliant cut: it sparkles just as much as a round diamond, but has a sleeker look on the hand. For the same weight, an oval has more visible surface area than a round stone. Here you’ll find our live inventory of oval diamonds—lab-grown and natural—with IGI or GIA certificates, transparent pricing, and a 14-day right of withdrawal.

What to Look for in Oval Diamonds

Proportions, polish, and symmetry rather than cut grade

No lab assigns an overall cut grade for oval diamonds. Instead, focus on the length-to-width ratio as well as the polish and symmetry listed in the certificate—ideally, both should be rated "Excellent" or "Very Good." An oval with a ratio between 1.30 and 1.45 has a classic look. Also, look for the dark cross-zone in the centre, known as the "bow tie," which is barely noticeable when the proportions are good.

Colour and Clarity for the Oblong Shape

Elongated shapes accumulate body colour at both ends, which is why an oval appears a touch warmer than a round stone of the same grade. G to H is a good compromise; for stones of about two carats or more, F or G is recommended. When it comes to clarity, the brilliant cut helps: VS2 and often SI1 are eye-clean if there are no inclusions centreed beneath the table.

Size in millimeters per carat

A 1-carat oval measures approximately 7.7 × 5.7 mm; a 1.5-carat oval measures approximately 8.8 × 6.5 mm; and a 2-carat oval measures approximately 9.7 × 7.2 mm. Because the length increases more than the width, the shape appears slimmer as the weight increases. A narrow ring shank further enhances this effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an oval diamond look bigger than a round one?

If the carat weight is the same, yes. The oval cut distributes the material over a larger surface area; for a 1-carat stone, the length is approximately 7.7 mm, compared to a diameter of approximately 6.5 mm for a round cut. The difference is visible but moderate, and it also depends on the depth of the stone.

What is the "bow-tie" in an oval?

The bow tie is a dark, horizontal shadow in the centre of the stone caused by the arrangement of the facets. Every oval stone has it to some extent. When the proportions are good, it is only visible from certain angles. It’s best to check for it in a photo or video of the specific stone.

What length-to-width ratio should I choose?

A ratio between 1.30 and 1.45 is considered classically balanced. Below 1.30, the oval appears somewhat round; above 1.50, it appears noticeably narrower and longer when held in the hand. This is a matter of personal taste with no right or wrong answer; the ratio is listed in the certificate for each stone.

Does an oval diamond require a special setting?

The ends are the most delicate parts. Typically, there are four or six prongs, and the two tips should be securely set. A bezel or semi-bezel setting provides additional protection. We’ll discuss the setting with you before we begin crafting it, so that it fits into your everyday life.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
