Cushion-Cut Diamonds
The cushion cut has soft corners, a square to slightly elongated outline, and a warm, slightly broader fire than the round cut. It appears less formal and is comfortable to wear in everyday life. There is no single standard for the overall cut quality of cushion-cut diamonds. Pay attention to polish and symmetry, as well as table and depth. The facet pattern is also important: Coarse, angular facets produce large flashes of light, while the finer “crushed ice” pattern appears more granular and sparkly. Both are correctly cut, but the effect differs significantly, so it’s worth taking a look at a photo or video.
Color and Clarity in the Cushion Cut
The cushion cut retains body color slightly better than a round stone, which is why grades G through H are a good compromise, and grades F through G look more subdued at two carats and above. It is forgiving when it comes to clarity: the finely detailed faceting effectively conceals inclusions, and SI1 is often eye-clean, especially in “crushed ice” stones.

A square cushion cut diamond weighing 1 ct measures approximately 5.5 × 5.5 mm; a 1.5 ct diamond measures approximately 6.3 × 6.3 mm; and a 2 ct diamond measures approximately 7.0 × 7.0 mm. The cushion cut has a relatively large amount of weight concentrated in its depth, so it appears slightly smaller from above than an oval of the same weight.

"Crushed Ice" describes a finely faceted cut that resembles crushed ice. It sparkles with a more dynamic glow and effectively conceals inclusions. Is a cushion cut square or oblong?
Both are common. Typically, the length-to-width ratio ranges from 1.00 to 1.05, meaning the stone is nearly square. Oblong stones have a ratio of 1.15 to 1.30 and appear slimmer to the eye. The ratio is listed on the certificate for each stone and is purely a matter of personal taste.
What level of purity is sufficient for cushion cut diamonds?
SI1 is often already eye-clean because the faceting refracts small inclusions. For stones with coarse faceting and large stones, VS2 is the safer choice. The location of the inclusions remains the decisive factor, not just the classification listed on the certificate.
Are the corners of a pillow delicate?
Significantly less than with a princess or pear cut. The corners are rounded, making them more resistant to impacts. Four prongs are usually sufficient. If you work a lot with your hands, a half-bezel setting is a practical addition that provides extra protection for the edge.
Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
