What to Look for in Marquise-Cut Diamonds

Symmetry is particularly evident here

There is no single standard for the overall cut. The key factors are symmetry and polish, as well as the length-to-width ratio, which traditionally ranges from 1.85 to 2.10. Both tips should lie precisely on a single axis, and the flanks should be evenly curved, because any deviation in this long shape is immediately noticeable. The bow tie in the center should also remain inconspicuous.

Color and Purity in a Long Outline

As with any elongated shape, body color accumulates at the tips, where it is particularly noticeable. G—or better—is the safer choice; H works well in yellow or rose gold. In terms of clarity, VS2 and often SI1 are eye-clean, provided there are no inclusions at a tip or in the center beneath the table.

Size in millimeters per carat

A 1-carat marquise measures approximately 10.0 × 5.0 mm; a 1.5-carat marquise measures approximately 11.4 × 5.7 mm; and a 2-carat marquise measures approximately 12.6 × 6.3 mm. The length significantly exceeds the diameter of a round stone of the same weight, which is why a marquise cut appears larger on the hand than its weight would suggest.

Does a marquise cut appear larger than other shapes?

If the carat weight is the same, yes. Because of its flat, elongated shape, the material is spread over a large surface area: a 1-carat marquise cut is about 10 mm long, while a round stone of the same weight is only about 6.5 mm in diameter. That is why the marquise cut is considered a particularly generous-looking shape.

How are the tips protected?

With V-shaped prongs that encircle both ends. With a marquise cut, this isn’t an option—it’s standard—because the tips are the thinnest parts of the stone. When properly set, a marquise cut is suitable for everyday wear, but it requires a little more care than a round cut.

What is a "bow tie" in the Marquise cut?

A dark cross-shadow in the center of the stone, caused by the arrangement of the facets. It is generally present in long-shaped stones. Good proportions keep it small and visible only from certain angles. Check for it in the video of the specific stone, rather than relying solely on the certificate.

What are the right proportions for a marquise cut?

A ratio between 1.85 and 2.10 is considered standard. Below that, the shape appears stocky; above that, it looks very narrow and fragile. This ratio is listed on every certificate, so you can directly compare two stones of the same weight.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget.
