Teardrop Diamonds
The teardrop cut combines a rounded crown with a clean point, giving it an elongated yet serene appearance. For the same weight, it offers more surface area than a round stone. There is no standard cut grade for pear-shaped diamonds. What matters are symmetry, polish, and the length-to-width ratio, which is traditionally between 1.45 and 1.65. Check whether the point sits exactly on the central axis of the crown and whether the shoulders are evenly rounded. The “bow tie”—the dark cross-shadow in the centre—should also remain inconspicuous in the stone’s appearance.
Colour and Clarity in the Round Brilliant Cut
As with all elongated shapes, body colour tends to concentrate at the tip. Grades G through H still look clean there, but for larger stones, grades F through G are the safer choice. Brilliant-cut facets are good at concealing inclusions, so VS2 and often SI1 stones appear eye-clean. Just make sure there are no inclusions directly in or near the tip.
Size in millimeters per carat
A 1-carat pear-shaped diamond measures approximately 8.5 × 5.5 mm; a 1.5-carat stone measures approximately 9.7 × 6.3 mm; and a 2-carat stone measures approximately 10.7 × 6.9 mm. The length is thus significantly greater than the diameter of a round stone of the same weight, which makes the pear-shaped diamond appear particularly striking on slender fingers.

In which direction do you wear a drop?
Most often, the tip points toward the hand—that is, away from the wrist. This makes the finger look longer. There’s no rule about it; some people deliberately wear the drop the other way around. The only important thing is that the setting protects the tip neatly in the chosen direction.
Is the tip of a drop delicate?
The tip is the thinnest part and therefore the spot where a hard impact is most likely to cause damage. For this reason, a V-shaped bezel that encases precisely this edge is standard. With a V-shaped bezel, a drop-shaped stone is suitable for everyday wear, even if it requires a little more care than a round stone.
What is the standard ratio for drips?
Traditionally, the length-to-width ratio ranges from 1.45 to 1.65. If the ratio is lower than that, the stone appears stocky; if it’s higher, it appears very narrow. This ratio is listed on every IGI or GIA certificate, so you can directly compare two stones before making your decision.
Does a teardrop cost less than a round diamond?
For the same weight and quality, fancy cuts such as the teardrop are generally priced lower than round cuts because less raw material is lost during the cutting process. Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
