What to Look for in Princess-Cut Diamonds

Symmetry and depth carry a lot of weight

There is no standard cut grade for princess cuts. Check the polish and symmetry in the certificate and look at the depth: Princess cuts are often cut deep, which means a significant amount of weight lies hidden beneath the setting. A length-to-width ratio between 1.00 and 1.05 keeps the outline neatly square; above that, it appears noticeably rectangular.

Colour and Purity for the Square Shape

The corners concentrate the body colour, which is why a princess cut appears slightly warmer there than in the centre. A grade from G to H is a solid compromise. When it comes to clarity, the fine sparkle helps; VS2 and, often, SI1 are eye-clean. Just make sure there are no inclusions located directly in a corner, because that’s the most sensitive spot.

Size in millimeters per carat

A 1-carat princess cut measures approximately 5.5 × 5.5 mm; a 1.5-carat stone measures approximately 6.2 × 6.2 mm; and a 2-carat stone measures approximately 6.9 × 6.9 mm. When viewed from above, the edge length is shorter than the diameter of a round stone, while the diagonal is longer, which makes the stone stand out on the hand.

Are the corners of a princess cut fragile?

The four pointed corners are the most vulnerable parts of the shape. That is why they are usually enclosed by prongs that grip the corner precisely. Set in this way, a princess cut is suitable for everyday wear. Without this protection, there is a greater risk that a hard impact could chip off a corner.

Does a princess cut look smaller than a round diamond?

From above, yes, because at 1 ct, the edge measures about 5.5 mm, compared to about 6.5 mm in diameter for a round cut. The diagonal, however, is larger at about 7.8 mm. The impression depends heavily on how deep the stone is cut.

What clarity grade is appropriate for a princess cut?

VS2 is a good baseline; SI1 often works as well, because the faceting pattern refracts small inclusions. More important than the clarity grade is that nothing is located in or near a corner. You can determine the position of the inclusions from the diagram on the IGI or GIA certificate.
