What to Look for in Colored Diamonds

Color comes first

With white diamonds, cut and clarity are often the deciding factors. With colored diamonds, hue, intensity, and even color distribution are the most important factors. So be sure to check out the photos and videos of each individual stone.

Natural or Lab-Grown

Naturally colored diamonds are rare, and their price rises sharply with color intensity. Lab-grown diamonds are also made of crystalline carbon and cost significantly less. This makes even a vivid color in a larger carat weight affordable.

Check the treatment in the report

Many colored lab-grown diamonds acquire their color, either entirely or partially, after they have been grown. This is common practice and should be clearly stated. IGI notes this in the report under “Comments,” for example, as “post-growth treatment.” You can open the report on any page of the stone’s details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are fancy-color diamonds?

This is the term used for diamonds with a distinct intrinsic color. They fall outside the D-to-Z scale for white stones and are graded according to hue and intensity, ranging from Fancy Light to Fancy Vivid.

Are colored lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Like natural diamonds, they are made of crystalline carbon and have the same hardness. The difference lies in how they are formed: in a laboratory rather than in the earth. The report clearly identifies them as lab-grown.

Have the colors been treated?

With lab-grown diamonds, the answer is often yes. The color is determined during the growth process, through post-treatment, or both. The stone's report specifies this. Feel free to ask us if you can't find that information.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s mantle, the other in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why, with the same budget, you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade. Both types come with a laboratory certificate from us; you can look up the report number directly with the laboratory.
