What to Look for in Yellow Diamonds

Full-color or just tinted

A white stone with a yellowish tint is not yet a yellow diamond. Only starting with the "Fancy Light" grade is the color considered desirable. A stone graded M or Z is still on the white scale.

What "Canary" Means

"Canary" is not a grade in the report, but a trade name for a rich yellow. Look for the designation "Fancy Intense" or "Fancy Vivid Yellow."

Yellow gold enhances the color

The stone appears richer in yellow gold, while white gold creates more contrast. A setting with a yellow background makes light-colored stones appear more vibrant.

Color Intensity in the Report

LevelThis is how the stone works
Faint bis LightA faint hint of color, often visible only next to a white stone.
Fancy LightBrightly colored, but light.
FancyA clearly visible color.
Fancy IntenseVivid and recognizable even from a distance.
Fancy VividVery strong and vibrant.
Fancy Deep und DarkA rich color with a darker hue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do yellow diamonds get their color?

Nitrogen in the crystal is what gives it its yellow color. This applies to natural stones, and nitrogen can also be incorporated during the growth process in the lab. Some lab-grown stones undergo additional post-treatment; the report mentions this.

How much does a yellow diamond cost?

Among natural colors, yellow is one of the more affordable ones. Lab-grown stones start at just a few hundred euros, while natural fancy yellow stones cost more. You can see the current prices in the list above.

What is a Canary diamond?

This is the term the jewelry industry uses for yellow diamonds with a rich color. The report usually lists them as "Fancy Intense Yellow" or "Fancy Vivid Yellow."

Which cut works best with yellow diamonds?

Cushion and Radiant cuts are popular because they concentrate the color within the stone. A round brilliant cut appears brighter and more sparkling.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s mantle, the other in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why, with the same budget, you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade. Both types come with a laboratory certificate from us; you can look up the report number directly with the laboratory.
