What to Look for in Pink Diamonds

The exact shade

The report lists the shade and secondary colors. “Purplish Pink” appears cooler, while “Orangy Pink” appears warmer. Pure “Pink” falls somewhere in between. Compare the photos, not just the names.

Mild or Strong

Fancy Light has a delicate appearance and pairs well with simple solitaire rings. Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid display vivid color even from a distance, especially with smaller stones.

The Right Gold

In rose gold, pink appears soft and warm; in white gold, it appears clearer and cooler. Light-colored stones can lose some of their color in yellow gold.

Natural or Lab-Grown?

Natural pink diamonds are among the rarest diamonds in existence. Their primary source, the Argyle Mine in Australia, closed in 2020. Consequently, they cost many times more than comparable lab-grown stones. In lab-grown diamonds, the pink color is usually achieved through post-growth treatment. The report lists this under “Comments,” and on the stone’s page, it is listed under “Origin.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How do pink diamonds get their color?

In natural gemstones, it is caused by distortions in the crystal lattice deep within the Earth. In lab-grown diamonds, it is usually the result of a treatment applied after growth. The IGI report lists this under “Comments.”

How much does a pink diamond cost?

That depends mainly on weight, clarity, and origin. Lab-grown stones start at a few hundred euros, while natural fancy-pink diamonds cost many times that amount. You can see the current prices in the list above.

Are rose and pink diamonds the same thing?

Yes, both refer to the same shade. The report uses the English terms, such as "Fancy Pink" or "Fancy Light Pink."

Why are natural pink diamonds so rare?

Only a tiny fraction of all mined diamonds are pink. The Argyle Mine in Australia, long the most important source, ceased operations in 2020.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s mantle, the other in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why, with the same budget, you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade. Both types come with a laboratory certificate from us; you can look up the report number directly with the laboratory.
