1-carat oval diamonds

A 1-carat oval diamond measures approximately 7.7 × 5.7 mm and therefore appears longer than a round stone of the same weight. A color grade of G to H and a clarity grade of VS2 to SI1 are a good compromise because the brilliant-cut facets conceal inclusions. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds.

What to Look for in Oval Diamonds

Proportions, polish, and symmetry rather than cut grade

No lab assigns an overall cut grade for oval diamonds. Instead, focus on the length-to-width ratio as well as the polish and symmetry listed in the certificate—ideally, both should be rated "Excellent" or "Very Good." An oval with a ratio between 1.30 and 1.45 has a classic look. Also, look for the dark cross-zone in the centre, known as the "bow tie," which is barely noticeable when the proportions are good.

Colour and Clarity for the Oblong Shape

Elongated shapes accumulate body colour at both ends, which is why an oval appears a touch warmer than a round stone of the same grade. G to H is a good compromise; for stones of about two carats or more, F or G is recommended. When it comes to clarity, the brilliant cut helps: VS2 and often SI1 are eye-clean if there are no inclusions centreed beneath the table.

Size in millimeters per carat

A 1-carat oval measures approximately 7.7 × 5.7 mm; a 1.5-carat oval measures approximately 8.8 × 6.5 mm; and a 2-carat oval measures approximately 9.7 × 7.2 mm. Because the length increases more than the width, the shape appears slimmer as the weight increases. A narrow ring shank further enhances this effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 1-carat oval diamond look bigger than a round one?

Yes, because the oval shape distributes the weight over a longer surface area. At approximately 7.7 mm in length, it is significantly longer than the round stone, which has a diameter of approximately 6.5 mm. Although its width is slightly less at approximately 5.7 mm, the overall impression is still that of a larger stone.

What is the right ratio for 1 carat?

A ratio between 1.30 and 1.45 is considered classically balanced. An oval with a ratio of 1.35 looks harmonious without being too narrow. The ratio is listed on the certificate, so you can directly compare two stones of the same weight before making your decision.

Lab-grown diamond or natural diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
