At 1.5 carats, an oval measures approximately 8.8 × 6.5 mm and noticeably fills the width of the finger. Because elongated shapes tend to concentrate color at the ends, G is the safer choice, while H works well in yellow or rose gold. When it comes to clarity, VS2 is a reliable choice. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds.

Standard length-to-width ratio: 1.30–1.45
No lab assigns an overall cut grade for oval diamonds. Instead, focus on the length-to-width ratio as well as the polish and symmetry listed in the certificate—ideally, both should be rated "Excellent" or "Very Good." An oval with a ratio between 1.30 and 1.45 has a classic look. Also, look for the dark cross-zone in the centre, known as the "bow tie," which is barely noticeable when the proportions are good.
Elongated shapes accumulate body colour at both ends, which is why an oval appears a touch warmer than a round stone of the same grade. G to H is a good compromise; for stones of about two carats or more, F or G is recommended. When it comes to clarity, the brilliant cut helps: VS2 and often SI1 are eye-clean if there are no inclusions centreed beneath the table.
A 1-carat oval measures approximately 7.7 × 5.7 mm; a 1.5-carat oval measures approximately 8.8 × 6.5 mm; and a 2-carat oval measures approximately 9.7 × 7.2 mm. Because the length increases more than the width, the shape appears slimmer as the weight increases. A narrow ring shank further enhances this effect.
Approximately 8.8 mm by about 6.5 mm in width, depending on the length-to-width ratio of the specific stone. A more slender oval with a ratio of 1.45 will be longer and narrower, while one with a ratio of around 1.30 will be shorter and wider. Both values are listed on the certificate.
Look for the bow-tie—the dark cross-shadow in the center. It becomes more visible as the surface area increases; good proportions keep it small. Check for it in the video of the stone, since the certificate does not list it as a separate characteristic.
Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are both composed of pure carbon and share the same crystal structure, hardness, and refractive index. The difference lies in their formation: one forms over millions of years in the Earth’s crust, while the other is created in a matter of weeks in a laboratory. Visually, they are indistinguishable without specialized laboratory equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than comparable natural diamonds, which is why you can often get more carats or a higher clarity grade for the same budget. Both types are certified by IGI or GIA; you can look up the report number directly with the lab.
