Having an Engagement Ring Custom-Made: From Design to a One-of-a-Kind Piece
A picture, an idea, or a shared story is all it takes to get started. We’ll turn it into a wearable ring design, create a CAD drawing of the design, and craft your custom ring in 3–4 weeks.

Short Answer
Yes, at Velur you can have a custom engagement ring made. We’ll evaluate your idea from a technical standpoint, select the stone, setting, band, and other details, create a CAD design for your approval, and then craft your one-of-a-kind piece. The typical production time is 3–4 weeks. As part of our commitment to quality, we offer a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
Custom-made
Don't just configure—truly design
At Velur, a custom ring isn’t just a standard model where only the metal color and stone are changed. The design process begins with an idea: perhaps an unusual marquise-cut arrangement, a floral setting, a hidden birthstone, an engraved band, or a specific silhouette that you’ve only ever seen as inspiration. From this, a unique ring is created, with proportions that are perfectly tailored to the stone, ring size, and your desired comfort.
You don't need to provide a perfect drawing. A photo, a screenshot, a rough sketch, or a description of what you like is enough for the initial consultation. We use templates as style references, but we don't simply copy other people's jewellery pieces one-to-one. Instead, we identify the elements that define the piece's character and use them to develop our own technically sound solution.
If you're still trying to decide between different styles, you'll find more inspiration on shapes and personal details in the guide "Design Your Own Custom Ring." This page, on the other hand, answers the practical question: How does an idea become a finished, custom-made engagement ring?
Velur Perspective
To us, luxury doesn't mean as many details as possible. Luxury means that every detail serves a purpose, that the proportions look balanced, and that the ring looks stunning from the side, on the hand, and next to a future wedding band.
The Process
From Your Dream to a Finished Ring in Five Steps
Understanding the Idea and the Occasion
The first step is to gather your preferences and priorities. What message do you want the ring to convey? What shape do you like? Is it meant to be worn every day, to be paired with a plain wedding band, or to incorporate a specific symbol? Ring size, the date, and the type of surprise you have in mind are also factors to consider when planning.
Specify Stone, Material, and Construction
We then coordinate the center stone, side stones, precious metal, setting, and band to complement one another. A large stone requires different proportions than a delicate solitaire; a pointed marquise cut needs more protection at the ends than a round stone. We’re also upfront about when an idea needs to be technically adjusted to ensure the ring is wearable and built to last.
Draw a CAD design and review it together
Our sketch shows the ring from multiple angles before the metal is worked. Among other things, you can see the height of the setting, the shape of the prongs, the thickness of the band, and the proportions of the stones. Any requested changes are addressed during this phase. Production begins only after you approve the design.
Manufacture, assemble, and finish by hand
The approved model is crafted, the gemstones are set, and the surface is finished by hand. The polish, symmetry, stone settings, and agreed-upon details are checked. Production typically takes 3–4 weeks.
Final Inspection and Handover
Before handing it over, we inspect the ring once more as a whole: Do the design, ring size, setting, engraving, and finish match what was approved? If the ring features a certified center stone, the corresponding certificate is included. You will then receive your one-of-a-kind piece along with our Velur quality guarantee.

Design Freedom
What can be customized on a custom ring?
Almost any visible or design-related decision can be part of the design. Nevertheless, not every combination makes sense automatically. That’s why we don’t look at the elements individually, but rather as a system: The stone helps determine the setting, the setting influences the height, and the height, in turn, affects the comfort and the eventual wedding ring.
Stone
Form and Character
Round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise, or a custom design with side stones. Options include lab-grown diamonds, moissanite, and select colored gemstones.
Version
From serene to sculptural
Classic prong, tulip, and cathedral settings, as well as bezel, hidden halo, three-stone, and floral details, are designed to complement the gemstone.
Ring Rail
Profile and Surface
Narrow or bold, smooth, pavé-set, organic, engraved, or with a European shank. You can also plan for a future combination with a wedding band.
Material
Color and Alloy
Yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold in the appropriate alloy, as well as platinum, subject to technical inspection. The color and cross-section are tailored to the design and intended wear.
Personal Information
What only you understand
An engraving, a hidden birthstone, a special number, a floral motif, or a shape that holds meaning in your story. Small details can hold the greatest personal significance.
Existing stone
Revised
An inherited or existing diamond can be incorporated into a new design following an individual assessment. For more information, see the guide to rings with your own stone.
If you’re still comparing options when choosing a stone, our guides explain lab-grown diamonds and moissanite regardless of the ring design. The 4Cs remain a useful starting point for evaluating a diamond; in a custom project, the specific visual impact in the design is also a factor.

Real Results
Six custom-made pieces, six completely different styles
The range is best illustrated by finished rings. In the collage, you won’t see generic renderings, but rather photos of real, custom-made Velur pieces undergoing final inspection: these include sculptural side stones, a minimalist emerald cut, an organic moonstone ring, floral marquise details, and a striking composition with colorful accents.
The photos are intentionally taken in the workshop. Gloves, certification documents, and neutral test surfaces capture the moment just before handover. They are less staged than a campaign photo, but they demonstrate just how differently individual designs can actually be implemented.

Quality Commitment
What You Need to Know and Approve Before Production
A compelling custom-made piece requires clear decisions before the ring is crafted. That’s why CAD approval isn’t just a formal intermediate step—it’s the most important quality control check in the design process. Don’t just review the top view. Make sure to have the side view, profile height, setting, and transition to the band explained to you as well. If a straight wedding band is supposed to sit flush later on, that needs to be factored into the design as well.
- Stone Type, Dimensions, and Orientation of the Center Stone
- Metal color, alloy, and visible surface finish
- Setting, profile height, prongs, and protection of delicate gemstone tips
- Ring band, ring size, engraving, and personal details
- Compatibility with a future wedding ring, if desired
- Final CAD views as a joint design approval
Once the design is approved, we’ll craft the ring within 3–4 weeks. Because jewellery is worn every day, our commitment to quality doesn’t end when we hand it over to you: We offer a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty does not cover normal signs of wear and tear, improper use, or damage caused by impact; if you’re unsure, we’ll take a look at the ring and discuss the best course of action.
A realistic promise
We strive to make virtually any idea a reality. If a design is too delicate, too tall, or unsuitable for everyday wear, we’ll work with you to adapt it. This protects not only the ring, but also the idea behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ on Custom Ring Design
How long does it take to have a custom engagement ring made?
Once the final design and CAD have been approved, the typical production time at Velur is 3–4 weeks. We’ll coordinate the specific timeline and your desired deadline with you before the project begins.
Is a photo or a Pinterest image enough to use as a template?
Yes. A photo, screenshot, or sketch can serve as a style reference. We identify the desired elements and use them to develop a unique, technically feasible design, rather than copying someone else’s piece of jewellery exactly.
Can I modify the CAD design before production?
Yes. The CAD phase is designed to allow us to review the proportions, setting, ring band, and details together. Any requested changes are addressed before final approval; production does not begin until after that.
What types of gemstones and materials can be used for a custom ring?
Options include lab-grown diamonds, moissanite, and select colored gemstones, as well as various shades of gold and platinum, subject to technical evaluation. The best combination depends on the design, the gemstone, and how the piece will be worn.
Does a custom-made Velur ring come with a warranty?
Yes. Velur offers a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Normal signs of wear and tear, improper use, and damage caused by external factors are assessed separately.
What do I need for my first inquiry?
It's most helpful if you can provide one or more reference images, your preferred gemstone and metal color, your ring size (if known), and your desired date. Even just a description or story is enough to get started; we'll work out the details together.
Tell us what you want your ring to look like
