Which engagement ring is right for you?

An engagement ring doesn't have to be as big or flashy as possible. It should complement your hand, fit into your everyday life, and match your personal style—and still feel just right years later. That's why at Velur, we don't start with a trend, but with the decisions that truly shape the ring's appearance, comfort, and budget: precious metal, stone, cut, setting, proportions, and ring size.

Gold Paint and Precious Metal

Yellow gold has a warm, classic look and makes light-coloured stones stand out in striking contrast. White gold gives the overall look a cool, calm feel, while platinum has a naturally light hue and is noticeably heavier. Don’t just look at the ring on its own: your skin undertone, other jewellery you own, and the colour of a future wedding band will all help you make your decision. The current configurator always shows which metals and alloys are available for each model.

Moissanite or Lab-Grown Diamond

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond; it is created in a laboratory rather than in a mine. Moissanite is a gemstone in its own right and typically exhibits a stronger, more colourful fire. Therefore, neither is universally “better.” Those seeking the classic play of light found in a diamond will usually make a different choice than someone who prioritizes high brilliance and a larger visible stone surface area. Our detailed comparison of moissanite and diamonds explains the differences without any sales gimmicks.

Cut and Proportion

The cut has a greater impact on the silhouette than the carat weight alone. A round cut appears balanced and brilliant; oval, marquise, and pear cuts make the hand look longer. The radiant cut combines a clean outline with a lively play of light, while an elongated cushion cut appears softer. Always compare actual photos of the stones on the hand: Two stones of identical weight can look significantly different depending on their length, width, and depth.

Setting and Ring Profile

A solitaire draws the eye to the centre stone. Pavé adds extra sparkle to the band, a halo enhances the visible surface area, and a hidden halo is more understated when viewed from above. In addition to appearance, height matters: A raised setting is often easier to pair with a straight wedding band, but may stand out more in everyday wear. A lower profile feels more secure but may require a matching wedding band later on. Also pay attention to the ring’s width—very delicate bands look delicate but should complement the stone and withstand daily wear and tear.

Ring Size and Comfort

The right size prevents the ring from spinning or getting caught on your knuckle. Finger size can change depending on temperature, time of day, and physical activity; therefore, don’t measure just once right after being in the cold or exercising. Our ring size guide explains the measurement methods. If you’d like to compare sizes at home, you can use the ring sizer. With a wider ring profile, the same nominal size may feel tighter than with a very narrow band. If you’re unsure, we’ll advise you based on the specific model before you place your order.

The Path to the Right Design

Start with the two characteristics that are definitely set—such as yellow gold and oval—and leave the rest of the decisions open for now. This narrows down your options without committing to a specific detail too early. Our ring advisor can help you create your first style concept. For a custom combination that doesn’t appear in the configurator, submitting a “Dream Ring” request is the best option. A good consultation should also be able to tell you if an idea is technically impractical or would be unnecessarily delicate for everyday wear.

Have Your Own Diamond Set

An existing diamond may hold personal significance and does not necessarily have to be replaced with a new stone. Before we begin planning, however, we check the dimensions, cut, condition, certificate, and suitability for the desired setting. Only then can we determine whether an existing design can be adapted or if a custom design is needed. The guide on sending in your own diamond to have a ring made outlines the process and explains what information we need for a reliable assessment.

Post-Decision Services

Before placing your order, be sure to check not only the product images but also the delivery time, return policy, sizing options, and warranty. The current delivery timeframe is listed next to the selected ring; making blanket promises would be unreliable for custom-configured pieces. For any questions that arise later, please refer to the current pages on returns and exchanges, resizing, and the warranty. If you’d like to pair the ring with a wedding band, you should consider the height and contour early on and, if possible, view both rings as a single, coordinated set.

Note: Delivery times, prices, and terms of service are subject to change. The information provided for the selected product and the Velur guidelines published at the time of order are binding.

And once the proposal has been celebrated: Our wedding bands are crafted right here in the same building—designed as a set and coordinated with your engagement ring.

Engagement Rings: Questions to Ask Before Buying

The price is primarily determined by the precious metal, ring profile, setting, type of stone, cut, size, and quality characteristics of the centre stone. That’s why it’s not just the visible carat weight that matters. The configurator for each ring shows the current price of the selected combination before you place your order.

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond and has the same basic chemical and physical properties as a naturally formed diamond. The difference lies in its origin. Moissanite, on the other hand, is a distinct gemstone with a different play of light.

Engagement rings can be returned or exchanged within 60 days. Exchanges are free of charge. For refunds, a 20 percent processing fee and a 6-euro return shipping label fee apply, in accordance with Velur’s current return policy. Exceptions are listed in the current return policy.

For many Velur engagement rings, the first resizing is free within 180 days, provided that the design, stone setting, and requested change allow for it from a technical standpoint. Whether and to what extent a specific model can be resized will be assessed before the work is performed.

Yellow gold has a warm, classic look, while white gold appears clear and understated. Platinum has a naturally light hue and is heavier. The key factors to consider are your skin undertone, the jewellery you already own, the contrasts you want to create, and your daily lifestyle. Availability depends on the specific ring style.

Production time depends on the ring model, the selected configuration, and current order volume. Velur displays the estimated delivery timeframe directly on the respective product page. Once the order has been shipped, you will receive the available tracking information for the shipment.

This may be possible after an individual assessment. Before a commitment can be made, factors such as dimensions, cut, condition, certificate, and suitability for the desired setting must be evaluated. Only then can a reliable assessment be made as to which ring design is technically feasible.

Velur offers a lifetime warranty against proven manufacturing defects. Normal wear and tear, accident damage, loss, and work performed by unauthorized third parties are not automatically covered. Please refer to the current warranty policy for specific details.
